Vibe:

"The worst thing about this place is having to leave it." - Bougies Customer

Hidden away across the street from the Shops at Sunset Place, in the heart of South Miami, Bougainvillea’s is an amazingly cozy bar. It has a homey, laid-back, cozy environment with a nice, casual, friendly, crowd. The front patio, is typically ablaze with flowing fuchsia bougainvillea, has a tropical feel and is surrounded by lush palms and tropical plants. It’s a great place to sip a few drinks with friends and lovers or relax and listen to live music. The place has an indescribable addictive quality. It’s like a second home. Once you’ve experience Bougainvillea’s you don’t want to leave and you keep coming back. The almost daily live music bands add to its unique character.

At Bougainvillea’s you can expect to find something different every night of the week. The crowd can be quite an eclectic crowd and you’ll see anything from “club chicks” to bar flies. It features three separate sitting areas:

  • The Front Garden: Bistro style mosaic top candlelit tables on Chicago brick

  • The Backyard: An expansive and informal space, is open Wednesday through Saturday

  • The Bar: The Centerpiece of the action and yields the "best seats in the house". During the re-design, all the old wood was saved to make bar. Serves a full bar featuring premium spirits and a wide variety of beers (domestic and imported)

Bougainvillea's bears a warm, wood interior muted by balmy red lights, all of which exudes an old-fashioned appeal, like the kind of watering hole you might fall into on a trip to Key West. A shelf near the ceiling holds several wine and liquor bottles, boxing gloves, boat models, a ceramic bulldog, plus various other knickknacks, and an archaic, 50-cents-a-gallon gas pump stands on the floor below.

History:

"Part of the charm of this place is it's timelessness." - Bougies Customer

Bougainvillea’s is built inside a 1929-era 1,500-square-foot cottage and has been open about five years. The cottage has been used as a retail gift shop, a tearoom and most recently a doctor's office before it was converted into Bougainvillea’s Old Florida Tavern. The cottage is constructed of rare Dade County pine and has wood siding painted brick red.

Bougainvillea's Old Florida Tavern was chosen as the location for a Maxim en Español photo shoot. Maxim en Español, a monthly magazine with national circulation, was looking for a spot that was typical of a “classic American bar”, but with a little spice and a lot of charm. Bougainvillea's fit their requirements to a T!! The daylong photo shoot took place in late May and is featured in the bar section of the July 2005 issue. Bougainvillea's is also featured in the August 2005 issue of Maxim en Español in the “Comer, Beber y Dormir” section.
